This book is dedicated to all of the animals and children who found homes with a loving adopted family.

Hello! My name is Sebastian. I was born with a short nub of a tail.

My mother, brothers, and sisters were also born with a short nub of a tail. I thought this was how all cats looked. When I was old enough to feed myself my mother told me that soon I would go live with another family. She told me that her human owners were only allowed to have her, and my brothers, sisters, and me would be going to new homes.

I was excited, but didn't want to leave. My mother explained to me that this was normal for house cats. She said I would be fine, and we would see each

other again. Mother always knew how to make me see the good in new experiences. Even when the experience was kind of scary.

Several weeks passed and I was adopted by two wonderful human parents. I was very excited because my adopted parents have a large cat family. I thought to myself, I am going to have many new playmates and friends. I was very excited. Soon I would be on my way to my forever home!

My first day at my forever home was a day I will never forget. Upon my arrival I was introduced to all of the other cats in my new cat family. To my surprise all of these cats had long tails. They looked at me and began to whisper among themselves.

“He has no tail!” They all exclaimed. They continued to whisper and stare at me. The other cats didn't want me to come inside.

My human parents told them, “Good cats accept all cats.”

The humans told the cats, “You let Sebastian come inside!”

Even though the cats did not want

to let me come in, they listened to the human parents, but still were not sure about accepting me.

I overheard the bushy cat with the long tail say, “He has no tail!”

One by one they asked me, “What

  happened to your tail?”

“Was it cut off ?” The old white cat asked.

“Maybe it just didn't grow.” I heard another cat say.

I explained to them, “My brothers, sisters, and I were born this way.”

The older cats made fun of me, called me names, laughed at me, and avoided me. One cat made an exception for me. His name was Bugsy.

Bugsy was an alley cat who never really had a home until the human parents adopted him.

Bugsy accepted me. Bugsy had also been adopted. He was new to the family too. Even though I was different he loved me the same as he loved the

long tailed cats. My human parents loved me too.

Several days later, my new human parents told me I would be going to see the veterinarian to get a check up. I did not know what a veterinarian was so I asked Bugsy. Bugsy explained to me that a veterinarian was a human that made sure I was in good health. Bugsy told me the veterinarian was very nice.

“Bugsy do you think the veterinarian can give me a tail?” “ I want the other cats to accept me.”

  Sebastian asked Bugsy.

Bugsy replied, “I don't know, but if anything is wrong the veterinarian will be able to make you better.”

Early the next morning we were off to visit the veterinarian. I was very excited and hoped the vet would give me a long tail. As we arrived my human parents told me not to be afraid.

We went inside and I was placed on a table in a cold room.

I heard the vet say to me, “You must be Sebastian.” The veterinarian checked my eyes, ears, and teeth. She then told my human parents that I was in perfect health. The veterinarian also said that I was a handsome Japanese bobtail cat. I thought to myself what is a bobtail cat?

We returned home. Bugsy asked me, “Is the veterinarian going to give you a long tail?”

  “No.” I replied.

“The vet said I was a Japanese bobtail cat.” I told Bugsy.

As I grew older I noticed I was much faster and could jump way higher than all of the other cats. They noticed this also, and wanted to know how I was able to do these things better than they did. I was not sure myself and did not know what to tell the long tailed cats. Nevertheless, they saw that I was a cat just like them and they began to accept me.

One day my human parents decided to look up my special and rare breed. They looked up information about the Japanese bobtail. They found out that Japanese bobtails are very fast, and can jump very high. All the other cats became very interested and wanted to know their breeds, and background. My human parents began looking up the other cats. They explained to all of us where we came from and what type of cats we are.

My human parents gathered us all around and told us about our backgrounds. The family consists of

American short hair, American long hair, Abyssinian, Bombay, and Ocicat.

That day we all learned not to judge by looks. Everyone is different but, we all have differences. That is what makes us all unique. Now we are a big happy family and all of us are special in our own way. All the cats love me, and I love them. That day we all learned that we are each unique and should always be proud of who we are!

Love to all, Sebastian the no tail cat.

  The end.
